DJ-1 (PARK7\/CAP1\/RS) is expressed in many cells and tissues, including the brain. Over-expression of DJ-1 can lead to cancer, whereas a loss of function can lead to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson\u2019s Disease. DJ-1 has a protective role against the oxidative stress response, which is known to be involved in the pathogenesis in Parkinson\u2019s Disease. Furthermore, DJ-1 has also been shown to have a protective role against the aggregation of \u03b1-synuclein, a major component in Lewy Bodies present in neurons of patients with Parkinson\u2019s Disease. More recently, DJ-1 is has been considered as a potential biomarker in the detection of early stage cerebral infarction since it\u2019s concentration increases three hours after cerebral injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
