Additionally, via its heparin sulphate chains, it binds a wide range of bioactive molecules that regulate cell behaviors important in normal and pathological processes. CD138 can exist in a <a href=\"#membrane_bound_CD138\">membrane bound form<\/a> and in a <a href=\"#soluble_CD138\">soluble secreted form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"membrane_bound_CD138\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caltagmedsystems.co.uk\/information\/wp-content\/uploads\/membrane-CD138.png\" alt=\"Membrane-bound CD138 detection\" width=\"200\" height=\"173\" \/>Membrane Bound CD138<\/h2>\n<p>Under normal healthy conditions CD138 is expressed on mature plasma cells, early pre-cursor B-cells and various types of epithelial cells. CD138 is also identified in practically all cases of plasma cell malignancies. The Shed CD138 remains an effector molecule capable of binding the same ligands as the membrane bound form.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown the serum levels of soluble CD138 detectable by ELISA assay can be used to aid prognosis in certain forms of multiple myeloma.
