Atelerix - Preserve & Transport Fresh Cells, Tissues & Blood, Without Cryopreservation - Distributed in the UK by Caltag

Atelerix

Atelerix

Atelerix was founded by a team of scientists who saw the limitations of cryopreservation - and knew there had to be a better way. Spun out from world-class research in Newcastle in 2017, Atelerix has grown into a platform for scalable, ambient preservation.

Atelerix's patented alginate hydrogel technology stabilises cells, tissues, blood products, vectors and viruses at room temperature.

Today, they're helping researchers, biotech firms and diagnostics teams store and ship cells and tissues with preserved viability, without the cold chain.

The Technology

Atelerix's plant-based hydrogels are pharmaceutical-grade, high-purity alginates, derived from brown seaweed, which are highly characterised and consistent. The alginate formulations have been optimised specifically for cell storage and protocols streamlined for ease of use and scalability.

Upon exposure of the liquid non-crosslinked alginate to free cations, gelation occurs encapsulating your precious cell, tissue, or virus sample, which stabilises lipid membrane integrity during hypothermic storage. Excess ion and water diffusion into the cell is quenched preventing membrane deterioration over time. This keeps the cells alive and in a state of "hibernation" allowing them to be safely stored and/or shipped for extended periods of time. When required, the sample can be quickly released through the addition of a salt-based buffer in a simple cell-friendly process.

All raw ingredients are produced to GMP guidelines and ISO 13485 standards making products readily translatable to regulated applications.

  • Extend shelf life of fresh biological products
  • Avoid damage associated with freeze-thaw
  • Preserve fragile cells and complex physiologically relevant cell-based models
  • Protect from physical damage during shipment
  • Avoid complex cryologistics and risk of thaw
BeadReady

BeadReady™

Suitable for suspended and adherent cells

Mix your cells with a gel solution and dispense the mixture dropwise into a gelation solution. As the droplets meet the solution, they form beads that instantly encapsulate the cells. Discard any excess gelation solution and replace with your cells' preferred medium, ready for storage or shipment. When ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel. Cells can then be sedimented, resuspended and placed in culture.

BloodReady

BloodReady™

For the encapsulation of whole blood in a simple, scalable vial format

Simply mix your blood sample with a Gel A solution and transfer it to a tube preloaded with BloodReady™ beads. After a few minutes, the whole blood and Gel mixture will gel in situ and is ready for storage or shipment at 2–8°C. When ready to use, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel, the beads are filtered out, and the whole blood sample is ready to use. The recovered blood retains key leukocyte populations and cell surface markers, ready for high-quality downstream applications including immunophenotyping, PBMC isolation, and functional assays.

CytoStor

CytoStor™

Suitable for suspended or adherent cells, viruses, viral vectors & mRNA-LNPs

Cells are mixed with a gel solution, then added to a vial containing gelation beads. After waiting a few minutes, the gel will cure in situ, encapsulating the cells. The vial is sealed and ready for storage or shipment. When ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel. Cells can then be sedimented, resuspended and placed in culture.

LeukoStor

LeukoStor™

Specially formulated for leukapheresis material in vials or blood bags

Mix a gel concentrate with leukapheresis material and transfer to a vial or bag containing gelation beads. After a few minutes, the apheresis material will gel in situ and is ready for storage or shipment. When ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel, the beads are filtered out and the apheresis material is ready to use. With Atelerix's bag-based products, components are simply transferred via a transfer line.

STORganoid

STORganoid™

Designed for the encapsulation of organoids and spheroids in a vial format

Organoids or spheroids suspended in medium are mixed with a gel solution and then added to a vial containing gelation beads. After waiting for a few minutes, the gel will cure, encapsulating the cells in situ. The vial is sealed and ready for hypothermic storage or shipment. When ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel. Organoids can be separated using your standard process before being placed in culture.

TissueReady PLUS

TissueReady PLUS™

Designed for the encapsulation of small tissues, biopsies and tissue resections

To encapsulate your sample, simply add the "ready-mixed" gel solution to a vial containing gelBase beads. Immediately insert your sample and wait a few minutes for the gel to form. It is then ready for storage or shipment. To release, simply add a gentle dissolution buffer, wait a few minutes and your sample can be retrieved and is ready to use.

TissueReady PLUS includes a ready-to-use gel, pre-diluted with a recommended medium for optimal tissue preservation.

TissueReady

TissueReady™

Designed for the encapsulation of organoids, spheroids, microtissues & other tissues

To encapsulate your sample, simply add the gel solution diluted with your medium of choice to a vial containing gelation beads. Immediately insert your sample and wait a few minutes for the gel to form. It is then ready for storage or shipment. To release, simply add a gentle dissolution buffer, wait a few minutes and your sample can be retrieved and is ready to use.

Organoids & spheroids

Organoids or spheroids suspended in medium are mixed with a gel solution and then added to a vial containing gelation beads. After waiting for a few minutes, the gel will cure, encapsulating the cells in situ. The vial is sealed and ready for hypothermic storage or shipment. When ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to dissolve the gel. Organoids can be separated using your standard process before being placed in culture.

WellReady

WellReady™

Suitable for cells, organoids and microtissues in multi-well plates

With cells, organoids or tissue models in place, three layers of a gel solution are pipetted into each well and cured using a Gelation Buffer. These gel layers offer physiochemical and mechanical protection during hypothermic storage and shipment. When plates are ready to be used, a gentle Dissolution Buffer is added to each well to dissolve the gels. The plates are returned to culture conditions and, once recovered, they are ready to be used for downstream assays or continued culture.

Modified WellReady™ formulations for air-sensitive cells and cardiomyocytes are available, as well as cells grown in culture inserts.
