Background:
MDBK (NBL-1) cells were established by S. H. Madin and N. B. Darby on February 18, 1957, from a visually normal adult cow kidney. In 1973, this MDBK (NBL-1) cell line was infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV); in 1982, a strain of MDBK (NBL-1) cells that hadn't been infected with BVDV was identified, originally from a freezing vial of the 96th generation from ATCC in July 1967. The descendants of these MDBK (NBL-1) cells were tested by NVSL, and no evidence of viral contamination was found. By August 1982, when R. A. Van Deusen provided MDBK (NBL-1) to ATCC, the cells had been passaged to the 110th generation and were not infected with BVDV.
