Background:
The mouse brain vascular endothelial tumor cell bEnd.3 [BEND3] was isolated from the brain tissue of endothelial tumor mice and immortalized through retroviral transformation carrying the polyomavirus middle T antigen. This cell exhibits endothelial characteristics like expressing von Willebrand factor and uptaking low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The cells constantly express intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), which increases after treatment with LPS, IL-1, and TNF-alpha. Earlier generations of bEnd.3 cells express MAdCAM-1 on the surface without stimulation, but after 30 passages they no longer do. Similarly, cells before passage 30 continuously express vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), but this stops after 30 passages. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) can induce bEnd.3 cells to express P-selectin, with stronger expression after 30 passages. bEnd.3 cells can be used in neuroscience research.
