Background:
The chondrocyte cell line ATDC5 comes from the teratoma AT805. In vitro, the cells show a series of phenotypic changes. These include stages from mesenchymal condensation to calcification. Bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) stimulates a continuous process of early and late differentiation. Activation of the parathyroid hormone (PTH)/PTH-related peptide (PTHrP) receptor leads to inhibition of this differentiation ability.
