Background:
Alpha TC1 clone 6 is an alpha cell line that was isolated in 1988 from the pancreas of mice with adenomas. It was cloned from an adenoma that developed in transgenic mice expressing the SV40 large T antigen oncogene under the control of the rat preproglucagon promoter. Alpha TC1 clone 6 is a pancreatic alpha cell line. It was cloned from the alpha TC1 cell line, which itself was derived from adenomas in transgenic mice where the SV40 large T antigen oncogene was under the control of the rat preproglucagon promoter. The parent cell line was poorly differentiated and produced both glucagon and insulin. The two cloned cell lines, alpha TC1 clone 6 and alpha TC1 clone 9, are more differentiated and produce only glucagon. Alpha TC1 clone 6 shows the highest level of differentiation and expresses the highest levels of glucagon. The alpha TC1 clone 6 is very useful for studying various biological properties of pancreatic islets, including glucagon biosynthesis and sensitivity to cytokines.
