Background:
The NCI-H596 cell line was established in 1983 by A.F. Gazdar and H. Oie from a chest wall mass of a 73-year-old Caucasian male with adenosquamous lung carcinoma; the mass was obtained prior to treatment. NCI-H596 cells express p53 at levels comparable to those found in normal lung tissue and exhibit no gross structural DNA abnormalities. NCI-H596 cells are positive for keratin and vimentin, and negative for neurofilament triplet proteins. NCI-H596 cells express multiple markers of squamous cell differentiation, including transglutaminase activity, involucrin production, and cross-linked envelope formation.
