Background:
NCI-H82 [H82] is a morphological and biochemical variant of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), as the primary tumor from which this cell line derives does not exhibit classic SCLC pathological features. The cells express two canonical SCLC biomarkers, neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and brain-type creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-BB), while showing undetectable expression of L-DOPA decarboxylase (DDC) and bombesin. Genetically, NCI-H82 [H82] produces an aberrantly sized 3.7 kb TP53 mRNA and harbors approximately 25-fold c-myc gene amplification, accompanied by a 24-fold elevation of c-myc transcript levels compared with normal cells. Functionally, the cell line expresses functional atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) receptors, yet ANP treatment exerts no effect on its growth characteristics. Immunostaining confirms positive expression of neurofilaments and vimentin; additionally, NCI-H82 [H82] constitutively expresses mRNAs of v-fes, v-fms, H-ras, K-ras, N-ras, and c-raf-1.
