Background:
The hTERT-HPNE cell line was established from pancreatic tissue of a 52-year-old male patient and immortalized by transduction with the retroviral expression vector pBABEpuro carrying the hTERT gene. Following transduction, the cells exhibited positive telomerase activity, did not undergo senescence, and continued to proliferate beyond 150 population doublings. hTERT-HPNE cells display features characteristic of intermediate cells formed during acinar-to-ductal metaplasia, including an undifferentiated phenotype, expression of nestin, and evidence of active Notch signaling.
